Senior-most Justice at the Supreme Court Kalyan Shrestha was appointed as Chief Justice (CJ) today.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav administered the oath of office and secrecy to Shrestha amid a function at the President's official residence Shital Niwas today morning.
The Constitutional Council had recommended Shrestha as CJ on June 9, and the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee had endorsed the nomination on June 29.
Vice-President Parmanand Jha, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, Constituent Assembly chairman Subash Nembang, deputy prime ministers, chiefs of constitutional bodies, former prime ministers, ministers, chief secretary, chiefs of security bodies and other high-level government officials were present on the occasion.
Shrestha was appointed the CJ after Ram Kumar Prasad Saha retired from the post on Tuesday.
