{1 feet=0.305 meters, 1 inch= 0.025 meter}.
Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing rates in adults and children. Authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. It is stigmatized in much of the modern world (particularly in the Western world), though it was widely seen as a symbol of wealth and fertility at other times in history and still is in some parts of the world. In 2013, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease.
Obesity and it’s classification
- Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health.
- It is defined by body mass index (BMI) and further evaluated in terms of fat distribution via the waist–hip ratio and total cardiovascular risk factors.
- BMI is closely related to both percentage body fat and total body fat.
- In children, a healthy weight varies with age and sex. Obesity in children and adolescents is defined not as an absolute number but in relation to a historical normal group, such that obesity is a BMI greater than the 95th percentile.
BMI is calculated as the subject’s weight divided by the square of their height and is calculated as follows.
Where m and h are the subject’s weight and height respectively.
About the Values of BMI
- BMI under 18.5 is considered underweight.
- BMI in between 18.5 to 25 is considered normal weight.
- BMI in between 25 to 30 is considered overweight.
- BMI in between 30 to 35 is considered normal obesity.
- BMI above 35 or 40 kg/m2 is severe obesity.
- BMI of above 45 or 50 kg/m2 is super obesity.

The Proper Symptoms of Obesity
The apparently relative first symptom of obesity that people most often refer to is when people start to give a sweet taunt “Ye to Mota ho gaya hai ji!”.
But this need not be the first symptom, may be it can be the last also in some cases typically of the mother who would notice it out of his child’s health and her affectionate feelings.
The most common symptoms are as follows:
- Clothes feeling tight and needing a larger size.
- The scale showing that you’ve gained weight.
- Having extra fat around the waist.
- A higher than normal body mass index and waist circumference.
- Dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing, a feeling of breathlessness)
- Easily fatigued by physical activities.
- Constant feeling of heaviness.
- Lethargy in the body
When these symptoms start to manifest, it would be nice for a person concerned about the welfare of his physical body become alert and attentive to the routine he is following and try to perform a Root Cause Analysis of the same.
Since root causes analysis would help you to eradicate obesity on a more profound basis from your body. else you might end up doing a patch up work which shall be again manifested in your body.
The example of boiling milk can be given. As long as the flame is on and the milk is boiling, if you sprinkle some water on the boiling milk, it shall go down for some time but again it will boil up and come up again. It will not stop until you put off the flame.
Similarly, if the root cause of the disease is not removed, it shall be suppressed for a little while but it shall come up again as soon as the medicine’s consumption is stopped.
Causes of Obesity
As per the Classical system of Ayurvedic medicines, it is categorized as a disease caused due to indulgence in the following activities:
A. Consumption of
- Snigdha, Madhura Guru Picchila Ahara – food with oily, sweet, heaviness and stickiness qualities,
- Nava anna – newly harvested rice and grains
- Nava Madya – newly made wine,
- Anupa Mamsa, Varija Mamsa – meat of marshy and aquatic animals,
- Gorasa, Gaudika, Paishtika – cow’s milk and its preparations and food preparations made of jaggery and pastry
B. Divaswapna – indulges in sleep during daytime,
C. Cheshtadveshi – who is averse to physical activities, a couch potato.
D. Shayyasukhe rata – indulging in sleeping and resting all the time
A detailed analysis leads us to the conclusion that obesity is caused due to imbalance of Air(Vata) and Mucus(Kaph) in our body.
Air increases the digestive fire, which promotes a craving for overeating and Mucus slows the process of digestion after the food has been taken.
Now the food which has been taken. due to slower digestion cannot undergo further process to be properly digested and hence, increases the body fat.

These causes include all the causes of obesity and the main emphasis has been laid upon the diet we are taking.
Elaborating each of them
Consumption of food
Usually, the food which we consume plays a major role in contributing for the factors that cause obesity since the fat inside our body comes from the food we take.
Consumption of food which is very oily, deep fried, very sweet, with a very high calorific value, has huge content of starch and non-vegetarian items especially sea food causes obesity.
This basically includes all the junk food, the sweetmeats at the time of festivals, the late night snacks and everything which has a good amount of fat of animal or plant origin.
Averse to physical activity
The lack of physical activities is a chief symptom of a sedentary lifestyle which is the life of all day work and no play. The only activity done is a bit walking and whole day sitting. This also includes lethargy in any sorts of sports and yoga exercises.
Sleeping in the day
Since the breakfast is not done by most of the people as 31 million people skip it daily, they usually have a lunch in the day and if people sleep during the day, the slow digestion process leads to accumulation of fat in the body.
Indulgence in sleeping and resting
Sleeping and resting tend to slow down the metabolic processes that causes a proper platform for fat to accumulate.
Prevention and Cure
Prevention
Since prevention is better than cure, obesity can be prevented by following just opposite to those things which can cause obesity.
- Consumption of food
The persons who consume a sumptuous breakfast between 7 AM to 9 AM, a normal lunch by 3 PM to 4 PM and a meager eating comprising of no solid food and completely devoid of grains at night by 8 PM can very easily prevent obesity.
Consumption of food after sunrise is the biggest cause of obesity and can be restricted to cool (boiled to cooled to room temperature), lukewarm or hot milk at night mixed with some cow’s ghee or some sweet thing.
The food which contains adequate amount of fat preferably of the Indian Cow Origin called Desi Ghee and oils of plant growing in the same areas like Mustard in North, Coconut and Peanuts in South etc should only be consumed.
Oils and fats of plant origin are rich in MUFA and PUFA which are good for the heart and overall bodily channels.
Sugar can be replaced by healthier substitutes like Jaggery [Gur], unprocessed powdered sugar [Khaand], candied sugar [Mishri] etc.
- Averse to physical activities
The person should provide proper time to exercises in the morning which can include a brisk walk, a stroll, jogging, running, sprinting, yoga practices and many more physical activities can be done so as to keep the body in a fit state.
A good habit of having a small walk after taking meals if maintained can cause great benefits.
Also a small walk in the park at night before sleep is beneficial.
- Sleeping in the day
One should avoid sleeping in the day to as much extent as possible. A small nap of 20-30 minutes can be beneficial but not a longer sleep.
- Indulgence in Sleeping and resting
The person who takes a regulated diet, rises before sun rise and doesn’t not sleep in the day and sleeps on time in the night and doesn’t consume anything after sunset cannot be affected by obesity. And he can very easily surpass all medicinal and surgical procedures.
One should not sleep during the time sun is rising and after sunrise. Getting up early in the morning around 3 AM to 5 AM can prove to be tremendous in any ailment of the body. Since a person requires 6 to 8 hours of sleep, thereby the schedule should be accordingly adjusted so as to accommodate proper sleeping health.
Sleeping after sunrise is considered to be the cause of all miseries. This seems orthodox but by practically applying it even for a few days of weeks, one can feel the change but the one who wants to do the same must do it GRADUALLY so as to avoid discomfort sinceOld Habits Die Hard. So one must slowly by keeping prior patience and perseverance try for inculcating the habits. By slowly shifting the time of sleeping and rising backwards by 15-20-25-30-45-60 minutes, one can achieve the desired result.
