Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat will present the budget for the fiscal year 2015/16 in the legislature parliament today. The budget amounting to around Rs 821 billion budget will have a primary focus on the reconstruction projects.
The government revised its budget in the aftermath of the April 25 earthquake and related aftershocks to include Rs 106 billion for reconstruction, according to Ministry of Finance source. Following the earthquake, the National Planning Commission (NPC) had raised the budget ceiling to Rs 841 billion.
Given the role of local authorities in implementing the reconstruction tasks, local polls is another priority of the budget.
Given the massive reconstruction needs in the quake-hit districts, governemnt has planned projects in different sectors, but cut down on projects in other districts.
However, owing to the continued pressure from lawmakers, the budget is expected to increase the fund for the Constituency Development Programme (CDP) from Rs 10 million to Rs15 million for each constituency.
The budget will also include amount to train 50,000 Nepalis on technical skills such as plumbing, carpentry and electical skills in order to meet the workforce for the reconstruction.
According to a source, the government is also expected to double the monthly allowance to elderly from the current Rs 500 as well as that of differently-abled and other beneficieries. Government employees might also expect a good news as the buget is expected to increase their salaray.
