Teachers guide you to take the right path in life. They are the ones who can mould a student’s character while making an impact on a student’s life. So, what kind of impact can a teacher have on the life of his/her student? In the context of Teacher’s Day — that falls on July 31 this year — some students talk with The Himalayan Times about teacher’s impact on a student’s life.
Frank and friendly teachers have helped me be a good student. During school days, the teachers who gave physical punishment had demotivated me to study creating dislike for the subject. However, there are teachers who have the quality to make us understand in a positive way. I like those teachers who understand our point of view, have a smile on his/her face while teaching us and also possess the capability to teach explaining a topic to the point. These behaviours of my teachers motivate me to concentrate more on what’s being taught.

Teachers who give attention to each student in class and ask questions to students have inspired me to study hard. A teacher, who can give practical examples while teaching, inspires me to learn even better and those kinds of teaching is never forgotten. Meanwhile teachers who understand our problems and who also entertain us at times help to keep our focus on study with fun.

A teacher who has the ability to keep student’s mind fresh helps me pay attention while studying. The teacher who starts and ends the class with something funny makes me eager to attend his/her another class. I find them interesting. Teachers should be those who teach us things we don’t know. However, during my school days when I was in Class VIII, I had a bitter experience due to a teacher. I was the captain of the school bus and I was maintaining the discipline in the bus. But a boy who was school captain was not following my instruction and he started a fight. Later the teacher did not punish him. Instead he punished me and from that day onwards I did not feel like fulfilling the responsibility of the school bus captain.

Teachers with sharp general knowledge have always amused me. Friendly teachers made me confident while asking questions. If a teacher is very strict, then a student becomes nervous while asking genuine questions and that student will never improve. During my school days there was a teacher Ravindra Sir who used to give us advice and knowledge on life that no other teacher has taught us. I was impressed with that teacher where he used to consult us according to our situation. My friend while in school had to work and he used to skip his homework but Sir knew his condition and never scolded him. Instead he used to tell him to do good in the exams.

Teachers are like gods, who give knowledge to the students. Teachers help to take right path and teachers are the guide who are important to any student. I feel teachers are there to facilitate the students to help them learn and gain knowledge.

It’s not only a teacher’s responsibility but also the students’ responsibility to choose whether to improve their life or not. Teachers are there to guide us but students have to follow their guidance properly to reach the desired destination. Improvement of a student depends upon his /her attitude towards the teacher.
For example when I was in school I used to get seventh or eighth position in the class and I was weak in Accounts subject. My Accounts teacher, who used to be friendly with me other times would teach me separately at times. And during those teachings, she used to be strict with me. That time I felt — why is she paying me such attention? But after the result I have understood her intention as I got 90 per cent in SLC because of her. I feel honoured to have such a teacher who motivated me and helped me do better in the subject, I was weak at.
