Chairman of the CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli has defended the decision of the top leaders to delineate the country into six federal provinces.
He was addressing the meeting with the party's lawmakers from the Madhesh and Tharu communities to seek their opinions on the demarcations.
Oli told the lawmakers that constitution is not merely UML's document but one of compromise and consensus, so the decision to craft six provinces is the correct decision in the given context.
"There are different opinions and demands from different quarters, and all these are indeed genuine demands," he said. "However, it’s a big challenge to arrive at a compromise or agreement among these varied opinions."
Hinting at the different disgruntled sides that have warned of staunch protests against the demarcations sides, Oli said his party cadres would "act as fire brigades" to peacefully put out "the fire set by the agitators".
Oli said that the parties were still accomodating feedback on the draft provisions which are still coming in thousands from different secitons and individuals.
"We're open to revise the draft if the demands are genuine," he said.
Earlier, the top four leaders held a meeting to discuss the ways to address the strong protests in several parts of the country against the state delineation.
