Bista appointed NSC Mem Secy

KATHMANDU, JUN 26 - Keshab Bista , 49, has been appointed the new member secretary of the National Sports Council on Thursday.
Bista replaced Sakuntala Nagarkoti at the helm of the sports governing body following an appointment from  Youth and Sports Minister Purushottam Paudel. The Minister, who is the president of the NSC, holds the authority to appoint the member secretary among the members who have been appointed to the board. Bista was nominated as the member from the sports association.
Nagarkoti, who had become the first female member secretary in NSC’s 66-year old
history, was appointed at the post to carry out daily activities with her stay already anticipated to be a short one. Bista will now take over the supreme body of Nepali sports for the next four years. Bista assumed his office on Thursday and told reporters that under him, Nepali sports will go through a ‘golden period.’
“I will try to bring unity among all the sports associations and officials and along with the coordination with the Ministry come up with a vision for the next four years. I assure that Nepali sports will see its golden period during our tenure,” said Bista who is among the third member nominated by the national sports associations. Rajendra Shrestha of Nepal Swimming Association and Mohammad Samiullah of All Nepal Football Association were the other two nominated.
Bista hails from Itahari, Sunsari and is the youngest among the three sons in the family. He began his political career through the Student’s Revolution of 1979. He is currently the acting president of the Nepal Sports Confederation, a sports wing under CPN-UML.
A President of the Eastern Regional Sports Development Committee in 2008, his association with sports began when he took a vice-president post of the Sunsari District Sports Development Committee in 1997. He was also the chief of Itahari Municipal Committee from 2002-05 and served as Sunsari District Committee member for six years.
Bista has been the member of National Representative Council of CPN-UML since 2011. Bista assured that he was going to work above his political inclining. “Although I have been appointed through a political party, I would assure that we would work with a strong unity and give continuity to the projects initiated by past member secretaries,” said Bista.
