When teachers change often

Deepa Ranjitkar. Photo: THTIn our college, teachers are not replaced. But if the teaching method of a teacher does not satisfy the students, then the students tend to ask the management to change that teacher. Mostly teachers who teach and explain in English, without using the Nepali language, have been changed by the students. It is better for the management of the college to have an observation class and ask students if they are satisfied with his/her teaching style.

There are times when a good teacher leaves the college. Mostly in my observation, if the college management is not flexible about the time of the teacher, the change in teacher is not a good sign for a student’s learning process. However, it would be better for both teachers and students if the management understands both of them properly.

I don’t have any problem with change in teachers if the teacher who replaces the earlier one is capable to teach us. However, if the said teacher is not capable — like unable to make things clear to students and has a soft voice — then these things do affect my learning process.
I feel that teachers leave one college if they are given better career opportunities in another. In our society, teachers are not as respected as they should be. College management might also be the reason — probably they do not give a satisfying salary to teachers. However, I think there are no incapable teachers, but if students are not satisfied, they label them as incompetent.

In our college, our teachers do not provide us with notes. They give us lectures and it is up to the students to do well. Students have to work hard on their part to learn in a better way. So, because of this reason I have not faced problems even if teachers get changed. Mostly our teachers leave us to do their own PhD abroad.

Though sometimes teachers change in same session, I have not felt any difficulty while learning from different teachers. Teachers too go abroad for higher education and the reason for this is the weak Nepali education. For a few days, both the teacher and students feel difficulty in adjusting, but gradually they can cope with each other. For better results, even the teacher who has come in place of someone else, there must be understanding and love between this teacher and students.

I get confused when there are two teachers for one subject. The teaching method of one teacher is different from the other, and sometime I feel that it would be better to have a specialised teacher for special topics. But then again there are times when I question why do we have two different teachers for the same course? But it all depends on the student as well how s/he works to learn in a better way. And I have a mixed feeling on having two teachers for one subject.
